While Ford's Bold Move this month in America was reverting back from the Five Hundred to the Taurus name for it's volume sedan, Ford of Europe is doing truly exciting things. We've all lusted over the Euro Focus for years, and have accepted that we may never get a compact car quite that nice. But now we don't want the Fusion, either. The Mondeo--which goes on sale this summer as a sedan, five-door hatchback, or wagon--is as gorgeous as it gets in the mid-size segment. Its interior is great, too, and features seven air bags, soft ambient lighting, keyless go, and a useful information screen centralized in the gauge cluster. Stability control and capless refueling are standard, and hill launch assist, adaptive cruise control, and eighteen-inch wheels are among the many appealing options.

Engines for the new Mondeo range from a small, efficient 1.8-liter diesel to a five cylinder gas unit rated at 200 horsepower. All engines will be available with the choice of a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. The driving experience should be similar to that of the award-winning S-Max from which it borrows much of its architecture, but the Mondeo also benefits from a lower center of gravity. It's painful seeing such appealing products coming from Ford overseas, when the company is facing such strife here at home. There is hope though--the Mondeo is one of a number of products that Ford is considering for future U.S. sale. It seems to be working for Saturn, and from the looks of the Mondeo, it could work for Ford, too.

2008 Mitsubishi Lancer - Detroit Auto Show

The latest expression of Mitsubishi Motors' recovery from its DaimlerChrysler addiction is the 2008 Lancer. With the company's net income "in the black" and positive response to new products in Japan, Mitsubishi appears poised to regain some of the prestige its products enjoyed in the '90s.

Mitsubishi officials praised the synergy between other companies in the huge Mitsubishi family for its current momentum. To demonstrate there is no sibling rivalry within the brand, the new Lancer shared the stage today at the Detroit Auto Show introduction with a concept of its high-performance big brother, the Lancer Evo, and the original Lancer rally car from the '70s.

Acknowledging that American sales of the new Lancer are critical to its continued rebound, Mitsubishi developed an all-new 2.0-liter engine rated at 152 horsepower and will offer an optional continuously variable transmission (CVT) in place of an automatic tranny. A 6-step Sportronic feature that allows "manual" shifts with a steering wheel paddle will be included in the sporty GTS trim level. The 2008 Lancer will also be the first vehicle sold in the U.S. to follow the new EPA mileage estimating tests.

The Lancer's design is a reflection of new Mitsubishi styling cues first seen on the 2007 Outlander as well as the Concept X car first seen in 2005. There's a distinctive European flair with the narrow headlamps and "shark nose" grille. The overall size is longer and wider than the previous generation, opening up more interior room and contributing to better handling. The 2008 Lancer comes in three trim levels: DE, ES and GTS. The ES will be distinguished by color-keyed door handles and chrome grille surround. The GTS will show off 18-inch wheels, front and side air dams and a rear spoiler.

One of the more distinctive features is the techno-art taillamp cluster that simulates LED lighting and complements the "chopped off" appearance of the tail section. The Lancer also gets a new selection of colors and crisper interior design. Mitsubishi's commitment to performance is evident throughout the Lancer family. The new C-segment platform, also first seen on the Outlander, features a stiffer chassis, MacPherson strut front suspension and a new trailing-arm, multi-link setup in the rear.

The Lancer also comes with Mitsu's 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty and 5-year/60,000 bumper-to-bumper warranty.

New Mitsubishi Lancer 2008 - only a deceit ?

The vehicle shown here looks very similar to the concept car Mitsubishi has been showing on the auto show circuit. That model was great looking, as is the car in the images shown above. Assuming these pixs are the real deal (as opposed to a Photoshop job), this is exactly what Mitsubishi needs to make it here.

Few peoples say "I had the pleasure of driving the 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer. Although the Embargo Game prevents me from disclosing driving impressions or releasing images of the actual car at this time, I can report coming away rather impressed.
Mitsubishi’s marketing team let us loose on some genuinely challenging mountain roads which shows a degree of confidence in the new Lancer that’s been largely absent with their current car.
While I cannot delve into specifics about the models I drove, I can say that the standard Mitsubishi Lancer comprises three trim levels, none of which is a Ralliart or EVO. Mitsubishi officials are looking to expand the former’s reach, hoping to give the name “Ralliart” an additional degree of cache among enthusiasts. On that order, consistent needling on my behalf led to the conclusion that the Ralliart will be to the EVO what the WRX is to the WRX STi. That means a meaningful bump in horsepower, torque, and overall capabilities, versus its garden-variety Lancer brethren, without encroaching on the EVO’s franchise.
It’s also worth noting that the new model was designed more as a global car than the Lancer currently in showrooms. Increases in width, power, and interior space were all done to make the car more competitive in markets outside of Japan. The fact that the car’s global reveal is set for January’s North American International Auto Show should be instructive as to the brand’s aspirations for the car, as well."
